Cloud vs On-Premise AI: Which Deployment Is Right for Your Business?

One of the first decisions our clients make is how they want their AI assistant deployed. At 1VA, we offer two options: a secure cloud VPS or a dedicated Apple Mac delivered to your office. Both include the same AI, the same features, and the same fully managed service.

So how do you choose?

Cloud VPS Deployment

With a cloud deployment, your AI assistant runs on a secure virtual private server managed by our team. Here's what that means in practice:

Advantages:

  • Accessible from anywhere — Your team can use the assistant from any device, any location. No VPN required.
  • Faster setup — Cloud deployments go live in 3–5 business days.
  • Automatic scaling — If your team grows, we can scale resources without shipping new hardware.
  • No physical infrastructure — Nothing to plug in, no space required in your office.

Security:

  • TLS 1.3 encryption in transit
  • AES-256 encryption at rest
  • Two-factor authentication
  • Remote wipe capability
  • 99.5%–99.9% uptime SLA depending on your plan

Best for: Businesses with remote or hybrid teams, companies that need quick setup, and organisations comfortable with cloud-based security.

Dedicated Mac Deployment

With a hardware deployment, we configure an Apple Mac with your AI assistant pre-installed, test everything, and ship it to your office. We then manage it remotely.

Advantages:

  • Data stays on your premises — For businesses in regulated industries where data residency matters, this is often a requirement.
  • Physical control — You can see and touch the hardware. For some clients, this provides an additional layer of confidence.
  • Same AI, same price — You get the exact same assistant and management service as cloud deployments.

Security:

  • FileVault full disk encryption
  • Remote management via MDM
  • Daily encrypted backups to secure cloud storage
  • Remote wipe if the device is ever lost or compromised
  • Two-factor authentication

Best for: Law firms, healthcare providers, financial services companies, and any business where regulators or clients require data to remain on-premise.

The Decision Framework

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Does your regulator require data to stay on-premise? If yes, go with the dedicated Mac.
  2. Does your team work remotely? If yes, cloud is the better fit.
  3. Do you need to be live in under a week? Cloud is faster (3–5 days vs 7–10 days).
  4. Do your clients expect their data to be on your hardware? If yes, the dedicated Mac provides that assurance.

What Stays the Same

Regardless of which deployment you choose:

  • The AI assistant is identical — same capabilities, same intelligence
  • We manage everything — security, updates, backups, monitoring
  • The price is the same — no premium for hardware deployment
  • You get the same integrations with your business tools
  • GDPR compliance is built in to both options

Still Not Sure?
